McDorman Home is a custom design‑build project with a strong emphasis on high performance and energy efficiency. This includes advanced building materials and techniques such as 1" insulated ZIP R‑sheathing by Huber, which increases overall insulation value and helps prevent thermal bridging — improving long‑term energy savings. As confirmed by a Huber representative, Theta Homes was the first contractor to use this product in the Richmond area.

The interior was carefully designed to balance style and function. All windows, entry doors, and sliding glass doors are energy‑efficient and contribute to better insulation and reduced energy loss. Interior elements include detailed trim work, modern finishes, and thoughtfully chosen materials that enhance both usability and aesthetics.

Nearly all lamps used in the home are LED fixtures (90% LED), chosen for energy efficiency and lower power consumption. Under‑cabinet and over‑cabinet LED lighting in the kitchen provide functional illumination with integrated dimmers for adjustable ambiance. Built‑in LED lighting in bookcases adds accent lighting around the fireplace, and remote controls were installed for fireplace and deck fans to enhance convenience and comfort.

The HVAC system was designed for optimal performance, with fresh air intake and efficient distribution throughout the home. Bathroom exhaust fans operate at low noise levels, and additional monitoring systems allow homeowners to track real‑time energy usage to make informed decisions about energy performance.

McDorman Home is EarthCraft certified, a respected green building program that emphasizes reduced energy consumption, improved indoor air quality, and sustainable construction practices. With a HERS score of 59, the home performs significantly better than standard building code requirements, offering long‑term savings and comfort.
